The Non-Profit Leadership Institute at Francis Marion University

             Michael Sponhour has been the Director of Public Affairs for the South Carolina Budget and Control Board since 1999. In this position, he manages media relations and marketing for the 1,200 employee agency whose duties include operation of the state retirement system, the public employee health plan, and coordination of state budgetary matters.

 

             Before joining the Board, Sponhour was a reporter for The State, where he worked for 10 years in positions that included covering state government and politics, statewide education issues, and local government.

 

             Sponhour earned a B.A. in Journalism from Ohio State University, and an M.A. in History from the University of South Carolina.  A volunteer with several  organizations, including Lexington County First Steps, Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina and the International Association of Business Communicators, he recently opened Greater Good Communications, a public relations consulting firm focused on helping non-profit groups. He is also a 2002 graduate of the South Carolina Executive Institute.
