Kaye Lingle Koonce is General Counsel and Executive Assistant to the President at Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Carolina where she has also served as Trident’s Dean of the Public Service Division and as a Department Chair in the Business Division. Prior to her tenure at Trident Tech, she was a special prosecutor for child rape cases in the Ninth Judicial Circuit. She is a member of the South Carolina Bar and the U.S. Supreme Court Bar.
Former Governor Jim Hodges appointed Ms. Koonce Chairman of the S.C. Human Affairs Commission in November of 1999. She served as Chair until her resignation in January of 2003. She also served on the Education Committee of Governor Hodges’ Transition Team.
Ms. Koonce recently completed a three-year term as a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys Board of Directors and she is still very active in NACUA. She is an Alumnus of the South Carolina Executive Institute and she has served for several years on the Institute’s faculty. Her prior community service includes membership on the Charleston City Election Commission, the Charleston County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, and the Charleston Civic Ballet and the South Carolina Counsel of Conflict Resolution Board of Directors.
Ms. Koonce received her undergraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Missouri. She served as a state Public Relations and Field Director for the March of Dimes prior to attending law school. Her law degree is from the University of South Carolina. She frequently speaks on higher education law and other topics including sexual harassment, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and governance issues. She serves as a pro bono mediator through the South Carolina Budget and Control Board.
Ms. Koonce began working with boards and commissions in South Carolina in 1982 under a Kellogg foundation grant designed to improve boardmanship and community service. Her focus has been governance models, standards of practice, and legal liability issues. Since 1998, Ms. Koonce has served as a consultant and facilitator for several colleges and non-profit boards and for the American Community College Trustees at regional and national conferences and workshops. |
